Hello brothers and sisters,
As you probably know, the book of James says “Do not merely listen to the Word, do what it says…’
I read that and, I don’t know about you, but sometimes I don’t even understand why I’m not doing more for Christ. I mean, sometimes we are in sin and just need to repent, that is clear. At other times it seems like we are the horse and we just can’t lead ourselves to water to have a drink!
So WHAT is going on?!!
One reason is that over the years we pick up thinking and behaving habits that end up focusing our attention on either our ‘internal’ world of thinking or our ‘external’ world of acting/doing.
. Do you know someone who talks and talks and talks and never acts?
. Or someone who can’t seem to sit still and HAS to be doing something?
Do they seem oblivious to their lack of action or stillness?
We often don’t notice the effects that our habits have on our walk with Christ (and on every area of our lives) until someone points the results out to us.
Are YOU that person in a particular context?
If you think you could be walking your talk more in a particular area (and especially if NOT doing it is causing you PAIN and problems…) then take this survey. You can print off this page or get a PDF download at the site below.
The answers on the left indicate your preference for the thinking process and the right side indicates activities you take action to do ‘outside of your head’.
It’s important to realise you are not EITHER a thinker or a doer – you are actually both but if you have a strong preference for one side of the scale, you will tend to spend more time there. What you actually need is a balance. You need thinking WHILST you are DOING or, even more radically, thinking IN your DOING which gives you motivational energy. To understand what I mean, think about an activity you were really anticipating, a holiday or sporting event. Did not the thought of it make you want to get ready for it and go as soon as possible. THAT my friends is putting MEANING into your PERFORMANCE.
So, to the questionnaire:
Pick an context where you want to become more effective translating ideas into action and briefly note it. Thinking about that context, mark on the scale where your thinking style preference is: 0 = equally balanced between the two.
I want to become more effective in/at ___.
